The first time I went to France was in 2015, and my family and I decided the only reasonable way to see it was to drive straight through it. We started in Normandy and slowly made our way south toward Monaco, watching France change outside the windows mile by mile. Gray skies and green pastures gave way to ancient villages, vineyards, stone buildings with faded shutters, and those beautiful stretches of countryside that make you understand why people have been writing love letters to France for centuries. Somewhere along the way, we arrived in Lyon, the culinary capital of the world, and for a young chef completely obsessed with food, it felt a little like arriving at the source.
